If you’re searching for your next favorite go-to restaurant or the perfect date-night destination in Hammond, Indiana, you have plenty of options. Hammond is home to a variety of incredible restaurants, from authentic taco joints to down-home diners. Here are a few of our picks for Hammond’s top restaurants.
Aurelio’s Pizza
Aurelio’s Pizza has been offering some of the area’s best slices of the good stuff since 1959. Whether you’re ordering in for game day or you’re having pizza night with the family, Aurelio’s has you covered. You can either build your own pies or try something new with one of its specialties. We suggest trying “The Works” with mushrooms, pepperoni, sausage, ham, and green peppers on a stuffed crust. Not in the mood for pizza? Aurelio’s also has tasty sandwiches, like the Italian Beef or Homemade Meatball, and build-your-own pasta options. Complete your pizza night with wings, toasted ravioli, and a salad.
Byway Brewing Company
Those who love to pair delicious food with expertly made craft beers will love what Hammond’s Byway Brewing Company has to offer. Find a spot in the biergarten-style outdoor seating area, and choose from Byway’s eclectic, yet delectable, menu offerings. Order a glass of your favorite beer to go with your food to make for a perfect lunch or dinner. Byway’s on-tap brews change regularly, so you can always try something new.
If you’re looking for something to split with friends, Byway has plenty of top-notch sharable appetizers, such as poutine, pork rinds, and chicken wings. From there, move on to one of the brewery’s stacked sandwiches, the “Eat the Turnbuckle” mac and cheese with sausage, or the spicy flatbread, Doom Rider. Between the beers, the delicious food, and the friendly atmosphere, Byway Brewing Company makes itself one of our favorite restaurants to hang out with friends.
The Cavalier Inn
Also known as the Cav, Cavalier Inn opened in 1949 and is firmly established as a Hammond staple. One of the biggest draws to the Cavalier Inn is its traditional Polish food, but you’ll also enjoy the cozy, family-restaurant style this eatery offers.
Go full Polish by diving into the naleśniki crepes, the sausage with sauerkraut, or golabki, which is stuffed cabbage. If you want a dinner a little closer to home, the Cavalier Inn also offers American staples, such as fried chicken dinners, chicken liver with onions, ham steaks, and seafood. For lunch, we suggest trying one of the many sandwich baskets on the menu — especially the Polish sausage sandwich with sweet potato fries and coleslaw.

El Taco Real
For some of the best, most authentic Mexican food in the area, head to El Taco Real. Whether you sit down in the restaurant’s festive dining area or take your family’s food to go, El Taco Real never disappoints fans of real Mexican food. In addition to some of the best tacos in town, El Taco Real offers a wide variety of Mexican classics. For a full meal, try the enchilada dinner with homemade chile ancho or the sope dinner filled with frijoles, your choice of meat, and vegetables. Tamales, fajitas, carne con chile, tacos, burritos — you’ll find a little bit of everything on El Taco Real’s menu.
Johnel’s Restaurant
Johnel’s Restaurant is another family-friendly home-style dining establishment that has solidified itself into a Hammond staple. With an expansive breakfast and dinner menu, your family is sure to find something to satisfy their tastes. Johnel’s claim to fame is its sandwiches, which you’ll find plenty of. French dips, Philly cheesesteaks, Monte Cristo, Reubens — you name it. If you’re looking for a larger entree, try the Athenian half-chicken, the shrimp stir-fry, or one of the pasta dishes on its dinner menu.
Schoop’s Hamburgers
Sometimes, nothing but a top-tier juicy cheeseburger will do. When that craving calls, check out Schoop’s Hamburgers. Schoop’s opened up its first shop in Hammond in 1948, and now it has over a dozen restaurants in Indiana and Illinois. Once you try one of this classic burger joint’s creations, you’ll see how it withstood the tests of time. If you’ve never been to Schoop’s, you might want to dive right into their most famous burger: the Mickey, which is a classic burger with two slices of American cheese. From there, you can broaden your horizons with the spicy Jalapeno Cheeseburger, the Swiss Mushroom Burger, or the barbecue-sauce-and-bacon Cowboy Burger. If you’re not a big burger fan, Schoop’s also makes some pretty delicious fried chicken sandwiches.
